The problem with...

Running a blog about having a "Corporate Free Christmas" is that it's easy to forget to post new things when you're in the process of making gifts. :)

So here's another shameless plug, only because I'm too sleepy to write a real post. :) Please forgive me!

Free Printable Christmas Gift Tags

What if there were no presents on Christmas?

Dr. Suess answers this difficult question for us:
Then he shook! What he saw was a shocking surprise!
Every Who down in Whoville, the tall and the small,
Was singing! Without any presents at all!
He HADN'T stopped Christmas from coming! IT CAME!
Somehow or other, it came just the same!
And the Grinch, with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling: "How could it be so?"
"It came with out ribbons! It came without tags!"
"It came without packages, boxes or bags!"
And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before!
"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store."
"Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!"

Give the gift of Skill

It's true that you can learn all most anything online, but nothing beats having a real live person teach you something new.  There are many times I've envied a friend's ability to sew, knit or make jewelry.  I've even gone as far as to ask for lessons.  The problem is that teaching a new skill involves a significant time commitment.  Time is the one gift that we are most reluctant to give to others.  As a result most people don't share their hard learned skills with others as often as they should.

Sometimes it's an issue of self confidence.  Often we underestimate the value of our skills.  You may not be able to recreate a period Elizabethan gown, but you can thread the sewing machine and make small household items.  Teaching someone else the basic fundamentals of a new skill is an incredible gift.

So think of what you can do.  Can you sew, knit, crochet, decoupage, cook, can, dance, sing, spin, batik, or make jewelry?  Can you paint a wall, change your own oil, use a belt sander, weld, fix a flat tire, lay carpet, change a fuse, or replace the parts in a toilet?  Can you use Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, or set up a blog? You'd be surprised how much accumulated knowledge you can share with others.

Watch those around you.  See what things they do well and what they struggle with.  If your grandma always needs your help to send an email then gift the gift of computer lessons.  If your girlfriend never changes her own oil gift her the gift of independence by teaching her to do it for herself.

Sharing your skills and knowledge with others is giving a gift that forever changes another person.

I'm so Jealous

I'm so jealous of One Pretty Thing.  I don't even want to blog about it because the site is so beautiful and USEFUL that it's embarrassing my blog.  One Pretty Thing has a daily dose of handmade goodness for you to try out at home, a beautiful easy to navigate website layout, and phenomenal link round up taste.  The projects listed here are wonderful, gift quality ideas.  In fact, I'm not sure why I even bother posting here.  I should just hang out over there instead.  :)

You know who else makes me jealous?  Better Homes and Gardens and Craft Bits.  Both have great crafting ideas and both are addictive to click through.

Shameless Self Promotion!

Shameless Self Promotion Alert!!!

I also operate the blog FreePrintableFun.Org.  The main reason for my starting the blog was so that I'd have a place to collect and make available all the little learning aides I make for my son.  I was having so much trouble finding worksheets, games, etc for children with autism online I ended up making a lot of my own resources.  Then I would share them on my blog.  On top of that I would review cool websites I found -- mostly so that I could store the links, with details, for my own personal use -- but hopefully others find them useful to.  I have links for a little bit of everything.  Some learning aides, some paper crafts, some house hold helps like stationery and checkbook registers, some paper toys.  It's kind of a hodgepodge of awesome printables.

Anyways, right now I have a post up with a list of great printable Christmas ornaments and ornament templates for you to print and assemble.

Just thought I'd share it over here too.

One Hour Craft and Confessions of an OCD Knitter

I just found some really cute T-shirts for sale at One Hour Craft.  They are Aussie goods so the shipping will be more than I can bear.   But, this site has a lot cute tutorials that would make great gifts.

2531655907_f30d1e8db1 Speaking of cute gifts, Confessions of an OCD Knitter gives you a great idea of ways to recycle those old gift cards.  She makes jewelry out of StarBucks gift cards.  This is a great gift for a coffee lover.  A Barnes and Nobel or Borders bracelet might be nice for a book lover.  Car guys who play guitar might like guitar picks made from Auto Zone gift cards.  Just a thought.

Photo Gifts

today2023I  like this surprise box tutorial from Crafting Daisies.  They have a lot of great ideas on their website but this tutorial really stuck out to me because it was easy to understand.  Make sure you check them out.  I used their tutorial for creating crayon nibbles and they turned out great!

If you don't have scrapbook paper you can print out some great Christmas designs at DeBee Designs.  You can upcycle old cereal boxes by painting, decoupaging or otherwise decorating the cardboard.
